Don't Punch!

It seems that the latest trend in the NRL is to say something along the lines of - "Well that wouldn't have happened if blokes were allowed to punch each other, a cheeky little halfback would think twice about getting under the skin of prop!"

Fair enough, I have no doubt that that's the case. In fact it's pretty hard to argue against that point, it's the fact that somehow we've reached this point.

The sin bin has become this evil tool that has the single purpose of ruining a game. Players are scared to go there in fear of letting their team down, refs are scared to use it in fear of a backlash from everyone involved for ruining the game, while you and I don't want to see it used because we're precious wee things.

If you throw a punch you should go to the sin bin, fair play. But this shouldn't serve as a deal breaker when considering if you're gonna sock Michael Ennis in the mouth, just be smart. Surely a Rabbitohs player could have waited until the game was in the bag and then unleashed on Ennis, or anyone.

But it's a murky old stream this one. Will you face a multiple week ban? Will you be sent to have an early shower? Who knows, which is the problem. 10 minutes in the sin bin should be the minimum, but 10 minutes in the bin shouldn't automatically lead to a trip to the judiciary.

What about the kids? What about the mums? Well they'll watch the action, they'll see that if you act like a prick you get smacked up and then they'll see what happens when you throw punches - there are consequences.

If players understand that their actions cause a reaction, then all should be fine. These are grown men who ooze testosterone, they will slip up at some stage and end up in the bin. You can still throw a punch guys, just accept that their might be a punishment ... like in any walk of life.

For some reason we've come to this conclusion that everyone has their hands tied and can only sort out on field differences with a push and a smile.

Oh, I know why, as soon as someone throws a punch they'll face plenty of weeks on the sideline and be made an example of by the NRL. Oh well, someone just throw a punch and let the floodgates open.
