Off The Top Of The Dome - Gut Feels About The Warriors

The Warriors have a bit of a history of pulling of the incredible, the borderline impossible and the slightly ridiculous when it comes to crunch time. Whether it's a knock out game or late in the season, they have won games that they simply needed to but never really looked like winning. Most of these games have come in finals footy, but they show just how awesome it can be when the Warriors do the unthinkable...

They've done it before many, many times and it's one of the great reasons why so many people love the Warriors, they've got this knack of doing crazy things.

Now with a must win game against the Penrith Panthers coming up this weekend, you could be forgiven for having a certain vibe. A vibe that the above videos give you, one of great hope and anticipation. But, the thing with the Warriors is that they also have a great history of buckling in games that are must win. To add to the bit of worry that realism brings, these games that they have basically not shown up for have been in late regular season games. While they can do the unthinkable in the finals and capture the hearts of NRL fans in knockout games, they also have a pretty strong record of loosing games in rounds 25 and 26 that they needed to win.

And it's not just that they didn't win, in many of those games - like the game against the Dragons last season - they just didn't show up. They didn't show up when their season was on the line.

Which leads me to this point, as someone who is neutral enough to provide realism as well as enjoy the ride that the Warriors provide - what's gonna happen against Penrith?

It's not as if the Warriors are up against the Raiders, Sharks or Titans ... they have to win against a Panthers team that is top 4 material, on merit. They're good, they do their jobs, they stick to their game plan and they're tough. Plus it's away.

But it's also not as if the Warriors are up against the Sea Eagles, Rabbitohs or Roosters. The Panthers are a great footy team, but they're limited. If you stacked the talent and potential of both sides up against each other, the Warriors would probably win, yet the Warriors are fighting to get into the 8 and the Panthers are sitting safe.

My gut feeling is that if the Warriors show up angry, ready to hurt some blokes and are willing to be disciplined and tough through the middle, they'll have to much power and pace for the Panthers. Then again we've seen Warriors sides in recent weeks who have done the complete opposite and left us all putting holes in walls.

My other gut feeling is that I'm awfully confused. The Titans offered no competition, but the Warriors showed up. It's simply a case of which Warriors side shows up because you know what the Panthers are going to offer. The Warriors have shown that they are capable of showing up and doing crazy things, while also showing ... well not showing anything.

All we can do is hope I guess.
