Diary Of A Warriors Fan - Part Two
There's no point, pointing out all the holes in the Warriors, negativity doesn't get you very far in this world despite what media folk will tell you.
I've had a bit of time to allow these results to linger, which doesn't make their performances any better but we've simply just got to look forward and somehow turn things around. That's why this all sucks, because for much of this season, even going back to their first game against the Newcastle Knights, the Warriors looked a bit flat. It's hard to look forward with hope and serve up some ideas, when for eight weeks we've been watching a team that's a fair way off the pace.
A good place to start is Dean Bell who will leave the club. Now we'll be told that Bell, the great man stepped aside with a positive spin but it's hard to not imagine that he was pushed out. Not pushed out in a huff, but ya know, a nudge nudge wink wink 'it might be best if you go mate' type of push.
And fair play, we're starting to see what I'm going to call the 'comfort brigade' head for the door. Great, that idea of comfort has its positives and its negatives, I reckon we've seen too much of the negative side with officials and players comfortable in their roles which results in a shit job being done. That goes just as much for the players as officials.
One of the sources of hope lies in Jim Doyle who has done a great job from all accounts in his recent roles. His influence will take time to filter its way through the club, especially filtering all the way down to the field which is why the results haven't come. Patience folks.
Doyle obviously didn't think that Bell was the recruiting guru to take the Warriors forward and you could probably put signing Roger Tuivasa-Sheck down to Doyle. Combine Doyle apparently knowing RTS quite well with Bell heading for the exit and it's not a daft conclusion to come to.
What's if .... Doyle wanted to start a fresh and thought that RTS was (and he is) simply better than Sam Tomkins? Bell obviously played some sort of role in getting Tomkins to the club and Doyle could have thought that neither were going to be a part of the club going forward?
Just on that recruiting thing, surely it can't have been too difficult to bring players through the club. There's plenty of talent (maybe not polished NRL prospects, but talent) floating around rugby league grounds in Aotearoa; I mean the leftovers after the Australian clubs get in first (which happens at intermediate school tournaments). And when recruiting young rugby players, the Warriors simply have to show them a clear pathway and the chance to be on TV which rugby simply doesn't offer.
So at the very least, change has started up top.
Now, we've got the week off which has come at a nice time. There's injuries to fix and according to Simon Mannering, the players were a wee bit tired so a rest will go down nicely with them. How the fuck they're tired, I'm not too sure.
Also, I think it's a good chance for Coach McFadden to suss things out a bit. I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt, but he's got to find a different way to get his message through to the players and he needs to find a balance between shocking the playing squad with selections and building a consistent top 17 playing group. It's clear that the players aren't responding to his defensive message; their defence sucks shit. While their attack could be described as predictable.
Here's a bunch of selection thoughts to finish with....
- When will Siliva Havilii get a run? The Warriors currently suck, with their dual hooking idea and Nathan Friend's being put on the field at very strange intervals and Thomas Leuluai doesn't run the ball and in the NRL, you need that. Surely, you can't do any worse that letting Havilii play for 80 minutes.
- Our centres simply don't want to play NRL footy. They are young which doesn't help, but Konrad Hurrell, Solomone Kata and David Fusitua haven't played like they are desperate to have a long NRL career. Again, McFadden doesn't appear too flexible here and we haven't really seen a lot from Dominque Peyroux.
- Dominique Peyroux who must be the most confused man in the world.
- No, the bench makes me the most confused man in the world. McFadden seems to love having blokes who don't do anything on the bench. Worst case scenario, McFadden persists with the two hookers which leaves us with three bench spots which isn't too bad. Especially when those three bench spots are filled by Albert Vete, Sam Lison and Sam Rapira.
- There are many whispers that Chad Townsend wants to get back to Australia for family issues, which in the long term would solve the Tui Lolohea problem.
- In the short term, we've got to keep on trucking with Townsend and Shaun Johnson. They are both very young halves and while they have, as a combination been poor, they need to figure out a way to turn things around.
For what it's worth, I'd run out this team against the Sharks. Shake things up, but not too drastically and assuming that blokes are healthy.
