NRL Offseason Octopus - Michael Jennings Heads West
I swear a transfer window would work. Cram all the offseason player movement into a three week period and let the fun begin, in saying that though it's pretty funky how it's mid-January and we've just witnessed one of the biggest moves ahead of the 2016 season. Michael Jennings has joined Parramatta Eels, swiftly replaced at the Roosters by Dale Copley in a deal that changed the landscape of the NRL in an instant.
Jennings to the Eels is immense. In signing Jennings alone, the Eels have picked up a quick-footed attacking weapon who has consistently been among the NRL's best centres for at least five years. Jennings thrives with a little bit of space where his opposing defender is on his heels, with Jennings' lightning speed over a short distance the best in the league in that position.
It's no coincidence that the Roosters romped home last season to finish at the top of the ladder as Jennings and Blake Ferguson were both healthy, giving the Roosters a dynamic threat on either edge who could easily dispatch a defender in a one on one situation.
The Eels don't quite have the same star-studded roster - Brad Takairangi/Clint Gutherson aren't exactly Blake Ferguson, however they do have the best winger in the league in Semi Radradra, who is expect to line up outside of Jennings. This is mouth-watering and many people have already noted this, however when you consider that Beau Scott/Manu Ma'u/Tepai Moeroa will sit inside Jennings along with Kieran Foran on that left edge and suddenly we have a very dangerous combination.
Last season Scott played mostly on right which could mean we see Ma'u and/or Moeroa as Jennings' hit-men. What I've loved about Ma'u since he burst on to the scene is that he can play either edge, even switching sides during games, however I'd love to see Ma'u given time alongisde Jennings on the left. That Tongan connection could be lethal, Jennings also apparently has some Fijian in him so he's the perfect bloke to be inbetween Ma'u and Radradra.
A Ma'u/Jennings/Radradra combination oozes danger. They all have great footwork/mobility which will make them a handful on attack and ensure they aren't a liability on defence, plus all three of them are straight up and down athletes so there's entertainment to be had.
What will keep me consistently intrigued will be the yin and yang nature of Jennings and Ma'u if this combo is rolled out. Jennings is a hot knife through butter while Ma'u simply looks scary, I can see this working out very nicely.
Foran ran Manly's left edge and after working with Steve Matai for many years, Foran must be thanking God, Jah, Buddha and Allah that Jennings has moved west. The Jennings/Radradra combination will be less important than Foran/Jennings and I'm eager to see how creative coach Brad Arthuer and Foran get; short-balls, sweeping plays with Jennings out the back, funky short kicks in behind the line etc. The options are endless for Foran and that's what should scare the rest of the NRL.
The spanner in the works with this theory is that Corey Norman sat out on the left last season, he's left footed so it suits his style. This then raises the question of how the Eels might play as Foran and Norman could break the left/right shackles and roam freely (which I'd love to see) or Foran would have to shift to the right.
If there's a team to watch over the first few weeks it would have to be the Eels as the first five weeks will offer us great insight into how Brad Arthur plans on using the weapons available to him. Arthur signed Foran knowing that he's a left sided player and that he already has one of those in Norman, so Arthur must have a few tricks up his sleeve.
I can't help but feel like something is still missing from this Eels team; there's no dominant halfback, no high quality x-factor forward and it remains to be seen whether the Eels players will fully buy in/put into action Arthur's clear plan of building a tough/rugged footy side.
The Eels do however now have the depth required to compete for a top-8 position, here's a bit of a depth chart/team list...
Fullback - Gordon
Wing - Radradra, Folau, Faraimo, Morgan
Centre - Jennings, Takairangi, Gutherson, Folau, Morgan
Halves - Foran, Norman, Kelly, Cornish
Prop/Middle Forwards - Mannah, Watmough, Wicks, Gower, Paulo, Hasson, Terepo, O'Brien,
Hooker - Peats, De Gois, Pritchard, King
Back Row - Scott, Ma'u, Moeroa, Pauli, Tanginoa
As for the Roosters, well thankfully they are being quite transparent with their moves which is nice of them. Grabbing Dale Copley to replace Jennings is clearly a move designed to open up some cap space as Copley simply isn't in the same footy-realm as Jennings. Nick Politis and the Roosters' decision makers would have pondered whether to stick with Jennings with the knowledge that Sonny Bill Williams could be returning in 2017 which would have then seen players like Boyd Cordner snapped up by big money offers from other clubs.
Jennings is 27 years old and he won't be getting any faster as he gets older so the Roosters decided that Jennings was expendable, thus putting their faith in younger players who need their contracts upgraded. Bringing in Copley for Jennings in purely on-field context is dumb, however with the bigger picture in mind, it's a nice move by the Roosters who also have a the safety net of having young centres like Brendan Elliot and Joseph Manu waiting in the wings.
Hint: Joseph Manu is a kiwi and he's amazing at the footy thing.
And yeah, Sonny Bill Williams must now be considered a near certainty to join the Roosters in 2017.
It's not often that you get business like this which is great for all parties involved: Jennings gets to head back out west, Copley feels the love, the Eels get a gun of a centre and the Roosters save some cash. High-fives all round.
