Diary Of A Warriors Fan - Hot Takes On Training Video
You've gotta love training footage don't ya? Well, I'm not so sure that watching training footage from the Warriors in recent times would have been much fun but now we've got Roger Tuivasa-Sheck and Issac Luke running around the training paddock? I mean I'd pay to watch Tuivasa-Sheck train, 'nuff said.
It's hard to comment on how things were, however I do get the feeling that the bar has been raised somewhat at Mt Smart. When watching this video I couldn't ignore the sharpness of the drills, the intensity that the players were operating at and the overall vibe of the training sessions. Now this might be how it always is with the Warriors although given the questions raised about their 'culture' I simply can't assume that.
The lads look like they are having fun and you can already see how seamlessly Luke and Tuivasa-Sheck have slotted into the Warriors. They are both effectively kiwis with Tuivasa-Sheck born in Samoa and growing up in Auckland, while they've also spent a lot of time in Kiwis camp with the likes of Simon Mannering, Ben Matulino and Shaun Johnson.
You'd be blind not to notice how fit Konrad Hurrell is looking and it's funny how you know Hurrell is ready for action as there's little being said about him. Instead of looking a bit chubby, Hurrell resembles a nugget and this should/could ... please!!! help him finally establish himself as a Warriors' centre.
Hurrell's fitness, or improved fitness should also help him defensively as well.
Note that Hurrell gassed Jonathan Wright, who isn't very fast.
Ben Henry has battled injury for much of his young rugby league career and while I'm bordering on jinxing things, Henry looked to be striding out nicely with his left knee heavily strapped. I'm still unsure how or where we will see Henry used this season, the fact that he is running is good enough for me at this stage.
In a similar vein, we see Shaun Johnson sprinting freely.
In one shot we get David Fusitua boosting, followed by Mathew Allwood and Blake Ayshford, highly convenient as they will be the forgotten men of this Warriors backline. Fusitua and Allwood will be competing for a back up wing spot while Ayshford offers cover at centre and second-row. The only one of these three who I can see starting for week one is Fusitua, who could get picked on the wing if Tui Lolohea isn't there.
Another outside back who I think we see in this video is Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad, sprinting alongside SJ7 in a singlet with his left shoulder heavily strapped. Niccoll-Klokstad returns to Auckland after a stint with Melbourne's Under 20s team where he featured as a centre, half and fullback so who knows where he'll fit in with the Warriors. All signs point to Nicoll-Klokstad being a lad to watch out for, especially when injuries start to provide opportunities halfway through the season.
James Gavet is sighted, socks down on the left of one of the sprinting groups around the mark. Gavet was rumoured to be close to signing with the Warriors and Andrew McFadden confirms in the video below that Gavet is training with the squad, one would assume this is on somewhat of a trial basis (train and trial contracts exist). This makes sense as Gavet has to shows that he's a better option than any one of our young forwards, which I'm not sure is the case.
Peep Ali Lauititi strolling around in the background in track pants. Lauititi could have been going hundys (100%) in this training session or he could just be chillin' like a villain, a very experienced villian who is taking it easy while the youngins get busy.
The overall vibe of this is very positive, mainly because it and other offseason media from the Warriors reinforces the hope I have. There's something about watching Tuivasa-Sheck and SJ7 racing each other, seeing Luke taking the line on in Warriors gear and even seeing Charlie Gubb and his mop of hair lurking in the background.
Our time has come.
