Diary Of A Warriors Fan - Chill, The Broncos Are Good

More Tui, more Bully

Friday nights in Brisbane are a staple of the NRL, just a certain rollercoaster that we love to ride. Friday nights in Brisbane against this current Broncos side are never going to be easy and that's where I'm going to begin this diary entry, knee deep in this noise that Andrew McFadden only has a few weeks to put wins on the board.

Let's get one thing clear - the Broncos are really good. The Broncos don't just have one of the strongest rosters in the NRL, they also combine that with effort, grit and all the great things you'd expect from a team coached by Wayne Bennett.

Our Warriors have certainly made some great signings and on paper could beat any team, however they still need to develop their combinations with a completely new spine in operation. No one would say that the Warriors share a culture or work ethic of the Broncos, we're trying to get to that point and we certainly aren't there right now.

A rather poor loss to Wests Tigers is one thing, a loss in Brisbane is different and we as Warriors fans should hope for the best but be prepared to see the Broncos walk away with the points. If that's to be the case, a hard-fought loss in which it is the Broncos super slick attack or expert defence that wins them the game would be the ideal way to lose for the Warriors.

If the Warriors are to win, well a few things need to happen from last week.

Issac Luke must run the footy. Look for Luke to scoot out of dummy half after Manu Vatuvei and Solomone Kata hit it up, with the Warriors rolling up the guts swiftly. Luke's running game will also keep defenders honest around the ruck, not allowing them to put pressure on Jeff Robson and Shaun Johnson.

We love our CocoSina Coconut Oil! Made in Samoa from Samoan coconuts and supporting local Samoan farmers.

Jacob Lillyman needs to play at a State Of Origin level. Last week he played at a Warriors level and the Warriors only boast a good forward pack when Lillyman is punching holes in the D-line with his cannonball runs.

Manu Vatuvei can't our leading offloader. Manu was good besides his errors last week and led our offload count with 3 with the entire Warriors forward pack combining for a single offload. Matulino's our King Offloader so look for him to flick a few out while Simon Mannering needs to offload more as well - all the good locks love an offload.

Get Tui Lolohea more footy! Lolohea had 10 touches last week while Manu had 21 and while I don't want Lolohea taking the same sort of carries as Manu, it's just an example of how under-used Lolohea was. The issue with Lolohea being on the wing is that he can be left out, however the asset of having Lolohea on the wing is that he can venture in field on attack with a sense of freedom. Break the shackles, get in the middle and along with SJ6 and Roger Tuivasa-Sheck, whack some defenders.

Sam Lisone needs more than 29 minutes as well. He's a beast and he's one of our few forwards who shows a bit of fire, a rampaging nature that isn't there with the other nicey-nice forwards.

Jeff Robson's gotta do his simple job to near perfection. Last week Robson missed far too many tackles, dropped the pill and kicked like your mate after a few too many buckies ... and SJ6 was still awesome. Imagine if Robson is kicking and passing like the solid veteran half he is, imagine what SJ6 could do then...

Unfortunately for Ben Henry, he's gone so Bodene Thompson slides in to start and I'm excited to see this back-row of Thompson/Hoffman/Mannering back in action. Thompson was a handful last week, averaging 11m per carry and breaking 4 tackles in 50 minutes which helped the Warriors come back in the 2nd half.

The only issue here is that I'd be happy to see Thompson/Hoffman/Mannering all play 80 minutes with another mongrel type of prop on the bench instead of Raymond Faitala-Mariner. Brisbane won't exactly be cold though, so RFM will need to give Thompson or Hoffman a break. How RFM goes will be extremely interesting as he's pretty much in the shop window.

To beat the Broncos, the Warriors must first try stop the Broncs scoring points. Easier said than done, but an improvement on their 40 missed tackles from last week should definitely help. Any sort of good performance in Brisbane will come via a far better defensive effort and as we know, the Warriors aren't flash on D.

Although, a shoot-out won't be a bad thing. The problem here is that the Broncos are great on D and will have plans to shut down SJ6/RTS which means this is a huge test for the Warriors attacking schemes, which I haven't been overly positive about in the past 12 months. Poorly designed plays that lack creativity are what the Warriors have served up and they won't help them put points on the Broncos, nor will trying to play solid footy with sweeping set-plays.

Offloads, steps, quick play-the-balls, razzle dazzle, stampeding runs, big shots.

That's how the Warriors are gonna beat the best.
