Round 25 In The A-League With Ze Phibber
The quarter century in terms of weeks has blown by and with it some interesting results. The top four are now separated by one point and Brisbane are hot on the trail of Melbourne City who would have been about as nervous as a lad with four pingers up his bum heading through festival security, however with the news of Perth's expulsion both teams will make the cut. With two games to go this league really is anyone's game, boy am I excited.
The first game of the week was between the Melbourne Victory and the Newcastle Jets. Wow what an upset here, Newcastle who were bottom dwellers pulled off a remarkable win against league leaders Melbourne. The match finished 1-0 with Edson Montano (New) breaking the deadlock. I'm not gonna lie Newcastle didn't deserve this win, but Melbourne didn't deserve it either, their finishing was so so so poor, I'm pretty sure if they had no opposition they still wouldn't have scored. Archie Thompson missed what felt like 30 opportunities, and the sad thing was no one else was any better. That was some seriously poor finishing from a team that is usually so clinical. Anyway well done to the boys from Newcastle 'cos they made this league a heck more exciting!
The second game of the week was between the Perth Glory and Sydney FC. The match finished with Sydney taking out the 3 points 3-0. Goals to Alex Brosque (2, Syd) and Bernie Ibini-Isei (Syd). I sort of feel a little bad for Perth, having being told that your points are going to be stripped and you have no chance of making the finals and then have to go out an play would be a hard task, and I think it did show. I mean they definitely deserve to be punished and the punishment they received was absolutely fitting it just was hard on the players. On a positive note Bernie scored a scorcher, a deflected cross came straight to him and after a tidy touch he sent the ball powering towards the top far corner leaving An outstretched Danny Vukovic no where near the ball, great goal and Phobber's Goal Of The Week.
The third game of the week was between Adelaide United and the Brisbane Roar the match finished with Adelaide claiming the W in a close fought 3-2 win Goals to Andrija Kaluderovic (Bri), Eugene Galekovic (OG Ade), Jack Hingert (Bri), Craig Goodwin (Ade), Pablo Sanchez pen (Ade). Wow, you could tell Brisbane really wanted this game, they came out firing and played a stellar first half, and even though they were outplayed in the second half still managed to defend well and keep a surging Adelaide out. Just need to touch on Brisbane's second goal, the own goal. That was the strangest goal I have seen. Galekovic ran out to meet the ball misjudged it, then scrambled and awkwardly kicked it in the air then tried to punch it clear and punched it in to the back of the net, it was so entertaining to watch (not if you are a Adelaide fan). Any way pretty clear who this weeks Knob Of The Week is going too! Poor form there buddy.
The fourth game of the week was between the Central Coast Mariners and the Western Sydney Wanderers. One early goal from Josh Rose was all it took for the Central Coast to claim the win. It was the final home game for John Hutchinson and Matt Simon and it was a fitting send off. Both teams had a lot of good chances but no one was able to make any of them count, bar of course Josh Rose who scored inside 2 minutes. For two teams with nothing really to play for except pride we did see some great football. The Mariners passing was exceptional and the Wanderers created many very good chances.
The final game of the week was between the Wellington Phoenix and Melbourne City. The match finished in a frustrating 0-0 stalemate. The Phoenix really squandered the chance of regaining the top spot of the league. Nathan Burns, that was an absolute minging pen mate, I understand that sometimes going down the middle is a good option, but it's always a better option to just tuck it into a corner. Glen Moss however was an absolute legend! If bloody love him he was on absolute fire pulling out some incredible saves! You'd hope that the Phoenix are able to step it up next week and get the win against the Mariners but you never no, I'll be crossing my fingers.
I have said this for probably the last almost 5 weeks, but this really is anyone's league. Next week's fixtures will be crucial and could all but solidify the championship. I think nerves will have a lot to play on this week, hopefully the players can put it all to the back of their mind and play some class footy.
