Black Cap Black Books .../Diary - December 8

Big old day for the Black Caps with the naming of a World Cup squad that will roll 30 deep in to the red light district of world cricket ... they named a 30 man squad.

The importance of this squad is pretty close to zilch, zero, nada, possibly the most un-important announcement of the day as 15 will get cut. Yup, half of the lads named have a teeny weeny shot at selection and we can pretty much figure out who the 15 might be. That's an easier avenue to take instead of debating who deserves to be in the 30 and who doesn't, all that matters is the 15.

So let me decipher the squad and figure out who is in the mix. It's pretty certain that Brendon McCullum, Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor will be in the 15. That's 3 lads, plus Tim Southee and Trent Boult, 5. Corey Anderson and Jimmy Neesham, 7 with Daniel Vettori and Nathan McCullum offering some spin taking the tally up to 9.

I'm expecting the Black Caps to select Luke Ronchi with Latham and B-Mac to offer wicket keeping cover. That leaves a spot open, which I reckon should be filled with a veteran such as Grant Elliot, that's 11. You'd have lean towards Tom Latham, Mitch McClenaghan and Martin Guptill getting the nod, though Latham and Guptill could fall out of favour depending on form - 14. That leaves one more spot, which is tricky but I'm going to go with Kyle Mills but I'd settle for Adam Milne. The experience and skill of Mills will be very handy. Here's my 11

  1. Guppo
  2. Neesham
  3. Prince Kane
  4. King Ross
  5. Skip B-Mac
  6. Anderson
  7. Ronchi
  8. Danny V
  9. Mitch
  10. Southee
  11. Boult

That leaves Latham, Mills/Milne, Elliot and Nathan McCullum as squad members.

All this makes the current ODI series against Pakistan which gets underway tonight, that much more interesting. There's spots up for grabs with situations like Guptill's current injury providing some conundrums. Neesham needs to show that he's got the goods with the willow in coloured clothing, while there will be plenty of competition with the ball.

Adam Milne has a head start with strong showings already on tour, but Mills will be keen to showcase his nous and Matt Henry will need to put his name in the hat a few more times. I love Southee and Boult, so for me there's only one other seam spot (the luxury of Anderson and Neesham) up for grabs. Mitch McC has that spot on lock at the moment but Milne is eager to snatch it.

Lastly, keep an eye on Dean Brownlie. I have no idea where he fits in to the team, but with the Black Caps not at full strength for the Pakistan series, Brownlie could make a juicy-impossible-to-ignore case for selection if he bags a heap of runs.
