The Other Warriors

NSW Cup Warriors Do It The Hard Way

The NSW Cup Warriors put in a gutsy effort to defend a 6-4 scoreline to beat the Wyong Roos over the weekend.

Ill discipline led the Warriors to play one man short after Charlie Gubb was sin binned for ten minutes after throwing a punch.

During Gubb's stint in the bin the Warriors scored through live wire hooker Siliva Havili producing game changing run out of dummy half to score on his own. Just as important was halfback Sam Cook being able to slot the conversion which would prove the difference in the end.

It wasn't long after Gubb returned to the field that the Warriors were down to 12 men again. This time Ken Maumalo was sent from the field  in the 33rd minute for lifting his knee as he carried the ball into the defensive line. Maumalo was making his debut game for the NSW Cup side at centre after being called up from the Junior Warriors.

For the next 47 minutes the Warriors would play with 12 men and manage to hang on for one of their most gutsy performances of the year. They had a few scoring oppourtunities early in the second half with Havili and Gubb going close but to no avail.

Defense would be the winning ticket for the 12-man Warriors outfit on the day and despite a try to the Roos in the 67th minute out wide, the missed conversion proved enough to see the Warriors snatch up the vital two competition points.

This week the NSW Cup Warriors at back home at Mt Smart as part of the triple header against Manly.

Junior Warriors Turn The Tables In Brisbane

If the last encounter between these two sides was anything to go by the Junior Broncos were favorites. The Broncos put a 36 points to nil display on the Warriors by half time and would eventually defend their lead to win 36 - 18. This time was a completely different story.

The Warriors entered the match with a point to prove and that they did finishing the game off 40 - 18. This was including the fact that they had lost the services of chief player maker and captain Mason Lino before the match through injury. In his place 17 year old Ata Hingano parterned by Semisi Tyrell from the centers.

Solomone Kata was also a boost for the side who traveled to Brisbane as cover for the NRL side, but was picked for the Juniors as he was not needed. He played a big part of the Warriors redemption match converted all but one of seven tries, running for 176 metres from 18 carries, six tackle breaks, a line break as well as setting up a try.

Despite the outcome, the Warriors were not the first to score but their response was huge posting three unanswered tries to lead 16 - 6 at the break.

The second half continued in similar fashion pushing the lead out to 22 - 6 within the first ten minutes. Eventually they reached the 40 point mark giving up only two more tries to the Broncos to post a bigger winning margin than what was put on them the last time they played.

The Warriors are still eighth on the ladder though and take on the Junior Sea Eagles this weekend who are even further down the ladder.
