Diary Of A Warriors Fan - Rooster Revenge
Before we get onto this week's game against the Roosters, in Sydney, there are few business matters that we need to explore. The first has Siliva Havili reportedly moving to the Dragons as the web of the Warriors expands even further with Havili joining the Dragons for next season, which is a smart move considering the arrival of Issac Luke.
It's a win-win situation as Havili will get greater opportunity with the Dragons while the Warriors get to open up that spot in their roster and, it must be said, get to move a player on who hasn't been able to grab opportunities as well as many would have liked. There's no point clogging up your top 25 roster with players who haven't quite shown the ability to take that extra step up and for whatever reason, whether it's Havili's issue or Andrew McFadden's thinking, Havili has been unable to graduate from his 10 minute role off the bench.
Not only does this coincide with the arrival of Luke, but also the promotion of Nathaniel Roache who the Warriors clearly view as a long term option. Watching the Juniors and NSWarriors it's pretty clear that Roache is a talented young player and his potential will only get more exciting under the guidance of Luke. With Thomas Leuluai also to return from injury next season, Leuluai can offer solid cover should he be needed, never sleep on how important it is to be able to call on an experienced head when injury/suspension strikes.
The other business matter comes from reports that Glenn Fisiahii might find himself leaving the Warriors as other clubs sniff around the talented, but injury prone fullback/winger. Fisiahii has been doing a great job for the NSWarriors since he returned from injury, but like Havili, the Fish has found himself behind a crop of outside backs that will only get more crowded when Roger Tuivasa-Sheck crosses the ditch.
Fish's issue is that there aren't many clubs who can guarantee him a starting fullback role, while he also has a long history of injuries. He could get a chance on the wing for some club but he's showing just how good he can be at fullback, while Warriors top dog Jim Doyle doesn't seem to keen on wasting salary cap space on those who aren't contributing to the top side. The best case scenario for Fisiahii is that Tuivasa-Sheck somehow finds himself playing in the six jersey and Fisiahii gets a look at the fullback spot, the chances of that happening aren't too high though.
Whatever the case is, it's really quite hard to be too negative about the Warriors' web continuing to grow. It's such a shame that the Warriors don't get any sort of compensation, an issue that I've explored before as it would be nice for the Warriors to get some sort of benefit for producing these players for other teams.
Remember the last time we played the Roosters? Hopefully you do, unless you've lost your short term memory to the herb because it was only a few weeks ago. Both teams were weakened by Origin and the Roosters won on the back of that drop by Jonno Wright, who swiftly became a scapegoat.
The Warriors however, didn't quite have enough in the tank to put the Roosters away and now they head to Sydney high on confidence. We've seen many Warriors teams who ooze confidence, but that's because they've been riding a wave of entertaining attacking footy whereas this confidence feels like it's coming from all round solid footy. While not perfect, this team looks to be confident that they can defend their line, get repeat sets and get into the grind with whoever their opposition is. The confidence to score points comes easily.
That comes with being able to roll out the same blokes on a weekly basis, which is great but also means that we are still without Ryan Hoffman and Konrad Hurrell. The only change this week has Jacob Lillyman rightfully taking his starting spot back from Albert Vete which means we get another opportunity to enjoy David Fusitua at centre as well as Raymond Faital-Mariner on the left edge.
We're still without Manu Vatuvei after he was a late omission last week which is a bummer because his carries would have been great against this Roosters forward pack. The Warriors do have forwards who are in form though with Jacob Lillyman looking like he's on a mission while Ben Matulino has been in form all season and Bodene Thompson's carries have been nothing short of energetic. This time around we've also got a few big bodies on the bench as well and Albert Vete, Charlie Gubb and Sione Lousi will all need to bring the ruckus to combat the Roosters forwards.
Thou shall never sleep on how great Simon Mannering is and his offloading ability could be crucial in getting second phase play which will help break up the Roosters defence. We've got too certified offloading freaks in Mannering and Matulino so look for them to squeeze out as many as they can.
The battle in the centres will be pure entertainment with Fusitua up against Blake Ferguson who is back near his best, while Solomone Kata and Michael Jennings have similar styles thanks to their more compact body shapes. While these one on one battles will be fun, all four of these centres will need to strong and wise on defence with different schemes and players likely to be thrown at them.
Look for Roger Tuivasa-Sheck to test Fuistua and Kata, he'll test their decision making as his passing game has improved dramatically and obviously his running game is top notch. He'll get the ball on the edge either from James Maloney or Mitchell Pearce with a bunch of options and Fusitua/Kata will need to be on point to limit the damage.
Against the Panthers, while Tuivasa-Sheck is certainly a presence, the Roosters showed that they can make life extremely difficult for centres. They ran a short side play with Tuivasa-Sheck on the inside, lurking, while Pearce ran at Waqa Blake (Panthers centre) with options either side of him...
For the Warriors, it's Shaun Johnson who will get the ball a bit wider at second receiver either from a forward (cue Simon Mannering's orgasmic passing game) or from Chad Townsend. Out wider where there's a bit more space, where Ferguson and Jennings will be defending on islands, Johnson will be crucial as he is now equally as talented running, passing or kicking the footy.
Here Johnson's speed gets him on the outside of a few defenders to the point where he makes the Storm centre, Hymel Hunt make a tough decision and come in on Bodene Thompson which gives the Warriors an easy overlap...
It was only a few weeks ago, but this Warriors team is different to the one that lost to the Roosters. There's a different vibe to them and it feels like there's a greater understanding of what they are all about. Notching all those close wins against teams below them has also come in handy as they are now in the top four and while there's not much room to breathe on the ladder, the Warriors can take a few losses to get blokes healthy and iron out any issues.
That won't be the case this weekend though, the Roosters offer an opposition who are strong in all aspects - they'll be tough to score against thanks to their organised defence while they have weapons across the park which will serve as a huge test for the defence of the Warriors. A strong defensive showing against the Roosters will be the most important confidence boos that the Warriors could get heading down the stretch.
